5 Foods to Avoid With Braces

5 Foods to Avoid With Braces
Stewart Smiles
November 25, 2025

Here at Stewart Smiles Orthodontics, we go the extra mile to help you feel supported from start to finish when it comes to your orthodontic journey. That means in the office and every day, so in that spirit, we thought it might be helpful to put together a breakdown on some foods to avoid with braces. Read on to learn more!

Why Food Choices Matter With Braces

When you start your braces journey, a few small changes in your eating habits can make a big difference in how smoothly treatment goes. While it might feel like you’re giving up some favorite foods for a while, protecting your brackets and wires is what keeps your smile progress on track. Every bite counts, and with a little care, you’ll breeze through treatment with fewer hiccups and a healthier mouth.

Protecting Your Brackets & Wires

Brackets and wires are designed to guide your teeth gently into alignment, but they’re not built to handle the pressure of hard or sticky foods. Crunching on things like nuts, chips, or hard candy can cause brackets to pop off or wires to bend out of place. Sticky foods like caramel or gummy candy cling to every surface, pulling at your brackets and making them tough to clean.

If a wire bends or a bracket breaks, it can delay your progress, require an extra appointment, and even cause discomfort. Choosing softer, braces-safe foods helps prevent these detours and keeps your smile journey running smoothly.

With Stewart Smiles, you’re getting the best in the business when it comes to braces: American-made and stronger than the competition. That being said, it’s still important to take care of them!

Keeping Oral Hygiene on Track

Food that sticks around your braces doesn’t just threaten the hardware. It can hurt your teeth, too. Sugary or starchy foods create the perfect environment for plaque buildup, which increases your risk of cavities and staining.

When you keep your food choices braces-friendly, you make brushing and flossing more effective, which means a cleaner mouth and a brighter smile when those braces come off. Think of every meal as a chance to help your teeth stay healthy during treatment.

How Long It Really Takes to Adjust

The good news? This is only temporary. Dr. Stewart and the team find that most of our College Station, Bryan, and Franklin patients find that it takes just a few weeks to adjust to their new eating routine. Once treatment is complete, you’ll be free to enjoy all your favorite foods again, this time with a confident, well-aligned smile.

5 Foods to Avoid With Braces

5 Foods to Avoid With Braces

While there’s no need to overhaul your entire diet, knowing which foods to skip can help you avoid unnecessary repairs and keep treatment moving forward. With a few smart swaps, you’ll be able to enjoy a satisfying variety of foods while keeping your braces and your smile in great shape.

1. Sticky & Chewy Foods

Sticky foods are the number one culprit behind broken brackets and loose wires. Caramel, taffy, and gummy candy cling to braces, stretching and tugging at every bite. Even “healthy” chewy snacks like fruit leathers and certain granola bars can wrap around brackets, making them difficult to clean.

If you’re craving something sweet, try soft alternatives that melt away easily, like a small piece of chocolate, yogurt, or a smoothie. These won’t stick to your brackets and are much easier to rinse or brush away afterward.

2. Hard or Crunchy Snacks

Popcorn kernels, nuts, ice, hard pretzels, and even crunchy chips can all spell trouble for your braces. The force it takes to bite into these snacks can snap a wire or dislodge a bracket entirely. Popcorn kernels are especially sneaky, as they often get stuck in hard-to-reach places and can cause irritation or swelling if left behind.

Here’s a quick tip from the team: if a food “crunches” loudly when you bite into it, it’s probably best to skip it for now. For something with a little texture, go for baked chips, soft granola, or puffed snacks that won’t strain your braces.

3. Tough or Crunchy Breads

Bagels, crusty rolls, and hard pizza crusts can put too much stress on your brackets. These foods might not seem harmful, but their dense, chewy texture means you’re exerting a lot of bite force, and that’s exactly what your braces don’t need.

Soft sandwich bread, tortillas, muffins, and pancakes are all great alternatives that won’t cause damage. If you’re enjoying something like pizza, try cutting it into smaller bites and eating the soft part of the crust rather than the edges. Little adjustments like that go a long way toward protecting your progress.

4. Foods You Have to Bite Into

Whole apples, raw carrots, and corn on the cob are classic examples of foods that can break or bend braces because of the direct pressure applied when biting down. But that doesn’t mean you have to give them up entirely.

Cut apples into thin slices, slice carrots into coins or sticks, or remove corn from the cob before eating. This way, you still get the nutrition you love without the risk. Think of it as rethinking your technique rather than removing the food from your plate altogether.

5. Sugary Drinks & Sweets

It’s not just about solid foods. It turns out that sugary drinks can also cause issues. Soda, sports drinks, and sweetened teas leave behind sugar residue that lingers around brackets and wires. This encourages plaque buildup and increases the risk of staining or decay.

If you want a flavored drink, try infusing water with fruit or drinking milk for a calcium boost. And remember: when you do enjoy something sugary, rinse with water right away and brush as soon as you can.

A quick recap of the biggest offenders:

  • Sticky candies (caramel, gummies, taffy)
  • Hard snacks (popcorn, nuts, pretzels, ice)
  • Chewy breads (bagels, pizza crusts)
  • Foods you bite directly into (whole apples, corn on the cob)
  • Sugary beverages (soda, sports drinks, sweet tea)

Avoiding these foods is all about making sure your braces stay intact and your treatment finishes on schedule. A little mindfulness now leads to a healthier, faster, and more confident result later.
